Camp DeBruce

Since 2004 the Chapter has sponsored a student from Sullivan County to attend the DeBruce Conservation Education Camp operated by the DEC.
The camp program consists of a variety of workshops and activities, which are designed to help the campers become more aware of the environment around them and, perhaps, stimulate their desire to participate in the sound management of our natural resources.

Casting for Recovery

This unique program of fly-fishing retreats gives women affected by breast cancer the opportunity to connect with other women, enjoy the beauty of the outdoors, learn a new sport and reclaim their physical, mental and emotional health.  Our Chapter has supported this program by donating a huge assortment of flies tied by Tony Jansic, who won the Volunteer of the Year Award for his efforts.

Conservationist of the Year Award

Again, in 2003 the Sullivan County Soil & Water Conservation District honored our Chapter with this award for our dedication and significant contribution toward conservation practices in Sullivan County. Specifically, willows are planted along the county’s trout breeding streams to reduce stream bank erosion and degradation and also help to shade the waters of the creeks making for better trout habitation.

Vibret Boxes

In 2004 the Chapter attempted a new venture of implanting fertilized brown trout eggs into local spawning streams using Vibert boxes, a project with which other Chapters have had great success.  President Mark Rando heavily researched the project and in late November 2004 twelve boxes were set in five locations. Unfortunately, due to the ‘year of the floods’, our success rate was poor. We’ll do better in 2005.
